Working paper published: Should You Buy That Agricultural AI? Eight Questions Before You Sign

The technology-appraisal line has published its first archived working paper: a pre-purchase test for agricultural AI built on four checkable conditions, with a stated scoring rule, a sensitivity analysis and four worked examples. FDMS version 1.2 adopted: conformance framework, twenty-nine triggers, and a reference workbook

Following an accelerated public revision cycle, The Farm Decision Model Standard version 1.2 has been adopted and is in force. The edition adds a full conformance framework (three classes, twenty-nine binary triggers, two claims), a theory chapter, and two explicitly marked extension elements covering institutional and data terms and the environmental account. Adoption followed a three-part validation programme: evidence coding across fifteen institutional sources, independent expert validation of the authored triggers against published law and systematic reviews, and calibration of trigger burden on paired demonstration cases. The standard and its reference workbook, a complete worked implementation, are free at auctusagri.com/fdms.

Peer-reviewed research from the smallholder trust programme published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems

The firm's applied research programme on smallholder trust mechanisms has produced its first peer-reviewed journal article: "When verification is not enough: institutional preconditions for blockchain-enabled payment discipline in smallholder agricultural value chains", authored by principal Jackson Mambozoukuni and published open access in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems (10:1893984). The article argues that verification technology improves farmer payment outcomes only where institutions exist to act on what the ledger records. Read it at doi.org/10.3389/fsufs.2026.1893984.

The Farm Decision Model Standard (FDMS v1.0) published — comments invited

The firm has published The Farm Decision Model Standard: fourteen elements every agricultural decision model must contain, each with a pass test and a named common failure. It is free to use and free to cite, and it is versioned so it can improve in public. Practitioners, funders, lenders, cooperatives and programme teams are invited to comment on version 1.0: what is missing, what is wrong, what would make it more useful in the field. Comments to standard@auctusagri.com; substantive contributions will be acknowledged in version 1.1.

Research as a public good — the firm's commitment to social and economic development

Both of this week's releases are free: the journal article is open access, and the Standard is published without charge or licence. That is deliberate. The firm's research agenda exists to improve how smallholder households, cooperatives and rural programmes make decisions, and evidence that stays behind a paywall does not develop anyone. Where the work can be a public good, it will be.

EU MRL revisions effective Q3 — three actives flagged for South African citrus programmes

The European Commission's pesticide residue database has confirmed scheduled reductions affecting three active ingredients widely used in South African citrus integrated pest management. Producers exporting into the EU through the June–October window should run an active-ingredient substitution review now, not in season. The Trade & Export Advisory desk is taking enquiries.

Field note — citrus harvest week, Eastern Cape

This week's farm visits across two multi-block citrus operations confirmed a pattern we have flagged previously: the cold-treatment scheduling decision and the MRL active-ingredient substitution decision are being managed by different people inside the same operation, with no formal handoff. One owner of both decisions is a near-costless management adjustment that most operations would benefit from.

WTO citrus FCM dispute — status note

The South African challenge to the EU's False Codling Moth-related measures, lodged at the WTO in 2022, remains unresolved at the time of writing. South African orange exporters should continue to treat the cold-treatment compliance cost as a near-permanent feature of the EU export programme. The dispute timeline is not the planning horizon.
